Beware an Everton reaction

Rotten form, “unexpected” results, sitting just 3-points above the ‘drop zone’ after 6 games and with rumours that their manager will be the next Premier League one to be ‘shown the door’. Doesn’t sound good for them, does it?

 

However, I’ve followed football long enough to know that, depending on the type of dressing room and the majority of players’ feelings towards their boss; that CAN have a galvanising effect.

 

Could be a tricky fixture (I purposely avoided using the word “sticky” there)…

Fernandinho & Nicolas take back their slots too in the middle of the defence and I think our manager will go for Premier League experienced Kyle on the right for this game. Who’ll get the left wing-back position? I think Benjamin might get the 'starting nod' this evening.

Rodders ‘holding / protecting’.

A familiar and strong attacking quartet of Raheem, David, Kevin and, I’m going for, Bernardo on the right. I make a point of saying the latter because Pep had to face a barrage of questioning in his pre-match press conference yesterday about the Portuguese attacking midfielder / winger about THAT tweet and although he looked a little irritated [at having to]; he made a strong point about the overall character of Bernardo that he has seen over the last 3 years. To drop him for this game might just fuel more unwanted questions…not that Guardiola chooses his player on such things…

Sergio back ‘up top’.

Claudio back on the side; Joao (to study this sort of game from his side-on position) & Oleksandr the replacement wing-back options from ‘the 7’. Phil, Ilkay, Riyad & Gabriel make up the rest as more attacking threats.

Notable absences:

-       Angelino – Not selected.

-       Aymeric Laporte – Expected to be ready around March 2020 after recent surgery.

-       John Stones – Injured for around another 3 weeks.

-       Leroy Sane – Now expected to be ready around January 2020, which is better news than the initial February / March return-estimate!

Do I agree with Pep’s (predicted) line-up?

As long as Mendy remembers to defend as well as attack, I’m absolutely fine with that.

Result? Well, I’ve mentioned the possible reaction of our hosts but I want to add also that it will be a greasy pitch for sure and under the floodlights of Goodison, it could be a 'boiling pot' of a match.

A lot also depends on the mood of the home fans and I’m reminded that we faced a very inconsistent Everton side on ‘their patch’ last season / February; where Evertonians were becoming increasingly disgruntled then too. In fact, I recall a lot in dark blue being interviewed before the game about whether they wanted their own team to beat us and, therefore, give Liverpool a helping hand and most struggled to want their own side to win.

7 months on and we’re in an almost identical situation!

We overcame all of those issues / doubts then and I think we’ll do the same tonight. It’s a vital, keeping-up-with-the-reds away win. I’ve got a feeling we’ll see a sending off or two in this match…

Expected weather conditions during the game: Wet, wet, breezy and, did I mention, wet? Potential pitch conditions, I’ve already mentioned, but with the rain and wind, 15C will feel more like 11 or 12 for the fans, I’m sure.

It’s always very difficult to guage what a manager might do in situations like ours when faced against a side in a lower division in the 3^rd round of the League Cup. I think, in our case, it’s gotta be a case of 'mixing it up' with first-team players who need a game and giving some of the younger players some experience too. That’s what I’m going for with this prediction.

Claudio gets his chance between the sticks for the first time since a raft of games in pre-season, where he impressed.

I think we’ll see starts for both Benjamin & Joao at left & right-wing backs and they should relish this opportunity to 'stretch their legs'. I can see Nicholas being asked to start again and should be partnered by Eric, I would think.

Ilkay is likely to get the deeper-lying midfield role tonight, while we should see Phil recovered enough to get a start. 'Sticking my next out' a little here; but I’m going for Phil to be partnered in attacking midfield by Adrian; an 18-year old Spaniard who impressed in pre-season. Either side of those, I think we’ll see Raheem mainly on the right – slipping-in behind the striker at times and allowing Bernabe to cover on the right flank when called upon – and I’m going for Pep to reward Oleksandr with a rare outing in his more-favoured, attacking left position.

Gabriel to lead the line for this one.

Scott should make his bench debut as cover for Claudio, with Angelino & Taylor providing defensive cover for the left-side as well as the centre. Felix is likely to make the bench as a central midfield change-option, with Bernardo, Ian & Sergio providing cover in more attacking positions.

Do I agree with Pep’s (predicted) line-up?

I like the look of that ‘mixed bag’, should he go with that (or similar).

Result? Let’s have it right, we’re not playing a League 1 or 2, mid-table side here – our hosts are 3^rd in the Championship on goal difference; are the joint-2^nd top scorers in their league and are have won 4 and drawn one in their last 5. Pep only needs eyes to see those stats and isn’t a manager to disrespect the opposition, which we saw very clearly last season in the domestic cups.

I know I have suggested a lot of changes and some youth inclusion but, should Pep do that, it’s still a very strong side he’d be putting out and it’ll need to be, in my opinion.

Conditions, which I’ll come onto soon, and a large, noisy home crowd will make things tricky for sure and I can see Preston finding the back of our net (although I am aware that I say that quite a lot and we then go on to keep a clean sheet).

Still…I do think they’ll score and we’ll need all our talent on display to put in a good shift. Do that, and I think we progress to the 4^th round, which is what I’m going for. Should be a good game!

Expected weather conditions during the game: Although it should be mostly dry up in time for KO – with just a small chance of some light drizzle – the pitch will have received a lot of rain throughout the day, which will make for a slippy pitch at least. I’m not sure, in general, what the state of the Deepdale pitch is but I’m guessing that it’s in fairly good fettle this early on in the season so the playing surface shouldn’t be ‘chopped up’ at least. Not necessarily a cold evening at 14C but a light, showerproof jacket might be best and a one of 4 pies on offer should help for those fans might feel any evening ‘chill’.
