A couple more injuries ahead of our Chelsea clash

Nothing major, in some ways, but it’s certainly called for a bit of a defensive & midfield re-think in our manger’s bonce ahead of this fixture; whilst acting as a reminder also about just how small-in-numbers (high in quality, of course) we are compared to other clubs.

If we had the 7s, 10s and even 12s out injured as some of the other sides have, we'd either have a bench full of kids or no one at all!

v Chelsea

Stamford Bridge

Predicted line-up, subs and outcome:

(Number correct from the starting line-up in the last game: 8/11).

A very fluid 4-1-4-1 / 4-5-1 / 4-2-3-1:

____________________Ederson____________________

Subs: Carson, Ortega, Lewis, Akanji, Phillips, Kovacic, Nunes, Grealish & Bobb.

Ederson in goal.

I’m going for a back-4 of Josko, Nathan, Ruben & Kyle.

Rodders to play the deepest of our midfielders and ahead of him is a 3, or 4, of Jeremy, Bernardo, Julian & Phil.

Erling ‘up top’ alone but closely supported by Alvarez, who is likely to play in ‘the hole’ between the attacking midfielders and striker.

With injuries such as they are, there might be a place for an additional keeper for this league fixture; with Scott keeping Stefan company on the “bench” 💺. Rico and recently-recovered (from a minor back niggle) Manuel are the defenders on the side, while Kalvin, Matteo, Matheus, Jack & Oscar are the rather large number of midfielders and wingers / forwards in ‘the 9’.

Notable absences:

-       John Stones – Out for this match with a muscular / thigh issue, I think it is, and will be assessed after the up & coming international break; for which he won’t take part in, of course. Unknown return date at this time.

-       Sergio Gomez – Was last seen on crutches about a week ago following a twisted ankle he acquired in training. I’ve heard no updated news about the Spaniard since, so I’m assuming that he’s not yet fully recovered.

-       Kevin De Bruyne – Continues to train alone whilst being assessed by physios after each & every session and still isn’t running / running much. However, the news is that he’s “feeling good” and his manager gets the impression that it won’t be too long now before Kevin is back training with his teammates, which would signal the start of the final process before being considered for match-day action. Looks like a mid-to-late December return, rather than a first-predicted January one, is possibly on the cards.

Do I agree with Pep’s (predicted) line-up?

There are other possibilities, of course, due to the forced absence of John Stones, such as Rico Lewis coming in to partner Rodri; dropping either Phil Foden or Julian Alvarez and putting Bernardo Silva on the right flank but…yep; that predicted line-up looks good to me.

Result? Chelsea have been described, very recently, as an “improving side”. Fair enough. However, I think that so-called improvement has come from a fairly low starting point to say the least, by their standards, and their progression looks like this in the league in their last 6 outings: L W W D L W.

As I say…improvement, yes, but from a low-starting point.

And whilst victory in their last game looks very impressive reading at first glance – a 1-4 away win at very much in-form Spurs – it came as the home side went down to 10-men on 33 minutes; lost their in-form creative midfielder, James Maddison, around the half-time mark and then went down to 9-men on 55 minutes. Despite all of that, Chelsea only just managed to squeeze themselves past their hosts; making it 1-2 on 75-minutes before making the scoreline look impressive with 2 goals on 94 & 97-minutes respectively. I’ve even heard two Chelsea fans saying that despite the imbalance in the number of players on the pitch, it wasn’t a particularly impressive performance from their side.

Of course they have good players spread throughout their team and a manager of some standing. There’s also the, “Cole Palmer / ex-City player factor” to consider and, yes; ANY upturn in form and results is to be considered a positive.

Another factor for us to-perhaps be wary of, if we are to believe a Chelsea-watching pundit that I heard speaking on the radio a couple of weeks back, is that, apparently, Chelsea don’t fare too well against sides who ‘sit & defend’ and then counter but DO tend to do better against sides who ‘come at them’. Well…I don’t think I need to tell anyone that we’re most certainly not a side to stick two busses in front of our roaming goalkeeper but ARE, instead, very much a side who likes to keep possession and press the opposition. That could be an interesting scenario to watch unfold…

Regardless, I have to look at how both sides are performing at the moment, improvement or otherwise, and although at one stage this week I was half-contemplating a draw; I’ve changed my mind in the last couple of days. I’m going for a potentially tough game, yes, but one I believe we’ll win.

Last season’s, corresponding pre-match prediction and result:

Prediction: Win

Result: Won

(Pre-match blog posting from that game)

Expected weather conditions during the game: Practically the same forecast as our last two home games – dull ‘n’ damp. Yep, it’s ‘Groundhog Day’ weather-wise with dark clouds, light rain, 9C and with a light, southerly breeze. Pitch should be good for some slick passing after being drizzled on for most of the day.

Lest we forget

Plenty of personnel changes predicted v Young Boys

Still an important game, of course, but with our position in Group G after 3 matches played being as it is, I would say that this-coming Sunday is even more important than Tuesday night’s fixture.

v Young Boys

Etihad Stadium

Predicted line-up, subs and outcome:

(Number correct from the starting line-up in the last game: 9/11).

A very fluid 4-1-4-1 / 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 (occasional 3-2-4-1):

____________________Alvarez____________________

Grealish___________________________________Bobb

______________________________Foden___________

____________Dias_______________Stones__________

____________________Ederson____________________

Subs: Carson, Ortega, Gomez, Walker, Akanji, Ake, Phillips, Kovacic, Silva, Doku & Haaland.

With genuine respect to our visitors, I can envisage quite a number of changes from our last starting 11 and ahead of our visit to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon; that’s despite still needing one more win to secure progression to the knock-out stages. I could be well wrong, of course, with this fairly bold suggestion.

Ederson continues in net but with a side note that I think we might see Stefan Ortega being given a start or two in our remaining group stage games should we win our match against the Swiss side.

An almost completely different back-4 (occasional 3) to that of last Saturday, with Josko, Ruben & Rico all joining ‘go again’ John.

Rodders is almost certain to start but, if so, could find himself withdrawn / rested / protected at some point in the second half. Similar to the defence and ahead of the Spaniard, I’m going for a lot of changes and some audacious ones too. With Mateo Kovacic being given a chance last weekend to show what he’s got and why we bought him; I’m going for our manager give the same opportunity to Matheus tonight. Phil is back in the starting line-up; likewise Jack on the left and the boldest of bold suggestions is that our manager will give a start on the right to 20-year-old, Oscar.

At Pep’s pre-match press conference, his side had another training session to assess Erling Haaland and although he said the player himself felt better [with his twisted ankle]; no final decision could be made at that time. Even if he makes it at all, I’m going for Julian to start up front this evening.

Two stoppers on the bench in the form of Scott & Stefan; Sergio, Kyle, Manuel & Nathan are the defenders in the 11 subs from an-allowed 12. Kalvin, Mateo, Bernardo & Jeremy are the midfielders / wingers on the side, while Erling is likely to provide striker cover should he make it at all.

If I’m right, that’s 7 players in the starting 11 who didn’t start in our match 3-days earlier.

Notable absences:

-       Kevin De Bruyne – Continues to train alone whilst being assessed by physios after each & every session. December / January hopes of a return could be closer to November / December after some promising reports.

Do I agree with Pep’s (predicted) line-up?

Yep.

Result? We saw, in the reverse fixture recently, that our visitors have it in them to hit us and it was a fine finish to level at 1-1 on 52-minutes. I also understand that they scored a cracker in a win at the weekend, which keeps them top of the table by a point with a game in hand. In our previous encounter, it then took a 67-minute penalty and another goal 4-minutes from time to secure a 1-3 win.

We definitely need to be on our toes tonight, for sure.

However, we did manage 68% possession away from home on a surface that we’re not used to and, in that time, managed an impressive 26 shots in anger. As I say, we definitely need to be ‘on it’ in the cold, Manchester drizzle tonight and if we apply ourselves like we did at the weekend, then I can see another home win for us. That’s what I’m going for – City to progress to the knock-out stages with a win tonight.

Last season’s, corresponding pre-match prediction and result:

Prediction: N/A

Result: N/A

Expected weather conditions during the game: I think I may have already given the game away but would it surprise you to hear that it’s gonna be damp? Practically the same forecast as the one for last Saturday afternoon’s game; only it’s going to be dark too, this time of course. Drizzly / dank atmosphere with a temperature of around 8C, which is likely to feel considerably cooler, I would expect.

Predictions v AFC Bournemouth

As seasoned footy fans will know all too well, ‘should win’ games don’t always mean ‘will win’.

After achieving local ‘bragging rights’ last weekend followed by a full 6-days off, the right attitude form our players is key today in my opinion.

v AFC Bournemouth

Etihad Stadium

Predicted line-up, subs and outcome:

(Number correct from the starting line-up in the last game: 10/11).

A very fluid 4-1-4-1 / 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 (occasional 3-2-4-1):

____________________Haaland____________________

Grealish___________________________________Doku

______________________________Foden___________

___________Silva_______________________________

_____________________Rodri_____________________

Ake______________________________________Walker

__________Akanji_______________Stones__________

____________________Ederson____________________

Subs: Ortega, Gomez, Lewis, Dias, Gvardiol, Phillips, Kovacic, Nunes & Alvarez.

This is a game we have to win in order to keep pace with ‘the pack’, of course, but we also have a Champions League game coming as early as Tuesday night; so I see a little rotation from our last outing whilst, at the same time, keeping a core of first-team starters in ‘the 11’.

Win that one on Tuesday and I would say that’s pretty much “job done” as far as the group stage is concerned; certainly in terms of progression but a big step too towards finishing top. It would be nice to put that one to bed ASAP so we can then concentrate on both Premier League and Club World Cup matters before the turn of the year; when the knock-out stages then come into play as well as the F.A. Cup.

Ederson continues in net, which is bound to add to Stefan Ortega’s frustration, if we are to believe reports of an interview he-apparently had with a German publication recently; where he stated, "I want to be the number one at Manchester City, otherwise I wouldn't have come at all".

I see most of the [possible] rotation coming in defence, with Nathan being given a start against his previous employer in order to give his legs a stretch; while recently-suspended Manuel might see himself straight back in action following his 1-match league ban. I think our manager might want to give John another workout following his recent return from a long injury lay-off; especially as he, along with the rest of his colleagues, has had a near-week’s rest following our derby victory last Sunday. Kyle to continue on the right, although I expect him to be withdrawn as soon as possible in the second half if the game-situation suits.

Rodders to ‘go again’ and likewise Jack, Bernardo & Phil. However, I just get the feeling that Pep might want to give both Jack & Jeremy a try on both flanks at the same time. I was wrong with that assumption last weekend but I’m going for it once again, especially as we’re at home and with Julian Alvarez having-had a rather quiet derby-day game for the most part.

Erling up front, hoping to continue his steadily-building momentum.

Number 1 hopeful, Stefan, continues as reserve stopper; Sergio, Rico, Ruben & Josko are the defenders in ‘the 9’. Kalvin, Mateo, Matheus are 3 midfielders waiting on the side for their opportunity, while Julian is the back-up striker.

Notable absences:

-       Kevin De Bruyne – Continues to train alone whilst being assessed by physios after each & every session. December / January hopes of a return could be closer to November / December after some promising reports. And there was an update from our Belgium international, where he announced that he is soon to have a major scan in order to see just how the hamstring is progressing. 🤞

Do I agree with Pep’s (predicted) line-up?

Hoping that both Ake & Akanji are ‘up to speed’ to cope with any attacks, counter or otherwise, after both seeing no action for 10-days…yes.

Result? A club in some trouble and a club criticised by many, not-even connected with AFC Bournemouth, for the removal of their last manager, Gary O’Neil. I am one of those football fans who was both puzzled and even slightly irritated by their owner’s / board’s decision to remove a manager who had turned the fortunes around of a struggling side last season.

A club who then brought in 41-year-old Spaniard, Andoni Iraola, and haven’t looked anything LIKE the Cherries side who solidified during the second half of last season; raising a few eye brows at the turn-around in quality they were showing at the turn of the year.

However, they are a side who, typically 🙄, got their first win last time out; albeit very close…and albeit at home against a very much struggling, Burnley side.

Wins – or a win in their case – can breed confidence.

For me, this is one of those games where if our players ‘rock up’ with the idea that this game is won before a ball is even kicked – especially off the back of such an important win against our neighbours from Trafford and then having a near-full week’s rest to pat themselves on the back – then we could all-too-easily come unstuck.

They might be bobbins; they might have just 1 win in 10 league games where they have scored just 8 goals and conceded 21 but if they form 2 defensive walls that we struggle to break down and we go pushing and pushing, whilst at the same time take our eye off things at the back, then they could very well hit us with a ‘counter punch’. According to our manager, however, his opposite number doesn’t like to sit deep but rather sets his sides up to play in an offensive and attractive way. We shall see.

If we DON’T turn up with a ‘Billy Big Biscuits’ attitude and treat this as if it were Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham that we’re facing then not only can I fully envisage all-3 points to us but something of an emphatic win too. I’m going for Pep to have his lads revved up for this game and for us to make it 4 wins from 4 in all competitions.

Last season’s, corresponding pre-match prediction and result:

Prediction: Win

Result: Won

(Pre-match blog posting from that game)

Expected weather conditions during the game: As is the theme in the area at the moment, it’s gonna be damp for the game. Damp is better that than gettin’ wind-battered & flooded as some areas of the UK have been; not least where are visitors are from. So, we have the ‘wet stuff’ falling before, during and after the match, which will make for a ‘zippy’ pitch for passing and with the temperature no higher than 8C along with a slight, easterly breeze; some fans may decide to choose a hot drink & food instead of a cold pint. I did say somemight.

The Trafford v Manchester derby

A real opportunity for us to shake off a little rustiness; gather some momentum once again and start ‘motoring on’.

I think it’s gonna be a difficult, highly-emotional stadium-atmosphere for us to shake that rust off, however…

v Manyoo

Scaffold Trafford

Predicted line-up, subs and outcome:

(Number correct from the starting line-up in the last game which, for me blog-wise, was our home game against Brighton: 8/11).

A very fluid 4-1-4-1 / 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 (occasional 3-2-4-1):

____________________Haaland____________________

Grealish___________________________________Doku

______________________________Foden___________

_____________________Rodri_____________________

Gvardiol__________________________________Walker

____________Dias_______________Stones__________

____________________Ederson____________________

Subs: Ortega, Gomez, Lewis, Ake, Phillips, Kovacic, Nunes, Bobb & Alvarez.

Ederson keeps the gloves for this Premier League clash.

A back-4, occasional 3 whenever it’s possible for Stones to join Rodri in midfield if I’m right with my prediction, of Josko, Ruben, John & Kyle.

Rodders to ‘sit & protect’; an attacking / creative quartet of Jack, Bernardo, Phil & Jeremy ahead of the Spaniard.

Erling heads the lot.

Stefan is the reserve stopper; Sergio, Rico & Nathan are the defenders on the side. Kalvin, Mateo, Matheus & Oscar are the midfielders / wingers in ‘the 9’, while Julian might have to be content with a place on the bench as reserve striker for this encounter.

Notable absences:

-       Manuel Akanji – Suspended for this game following 2 yellows in our last league outing.

-       Kevin De Bruyne – Continues to train alone whilst being assessed by physios after each & every session. December / January hopes of a return could be closer to November / December.

Do I agree with Pep’s (predicted) line-up?

If Jack can produce another good performance similar to the one in midweek, I love that (predicted) line-up; especially the very strong midfield aspect.

I believe, with that set-up, if our lads all perform well, we can stretch the home side wide and then, perhaps, allow John Stones to ‘dip in’ to thinned-out midfield in order to exploit a sure-to-be-packed, otherwise, Manyoo centre.

Result? Despite some positive thoughts about our potential 11, I have to say that I go into the game with a little less optimism than I would like. Pre-derby nerves? Well, I shouldn’t have – we’re facing a side who, if you present your ‘A’ game’ in front of them, can crumble like a Crumbly Lancashire cheese at the moment.

Our hosts from M16 are a side who are struggling to steady the ship and find a true course so far this season – one minute seemingly getting to grips with each wave that comes along then, in the next moment, being knocked off balance as they struggle to engage the ship’s stabilisers.

However, we’re not exactly ‘firing on all cylinders’ ourselves right at this moment in time…and that’s despite winning 10 of our 13 games played in all competitions so far this season. We’ve also won the last two, thankfully, but those two victories come in a run of 6 games that look like this: L L W L W W.

I think that puts our 10 victories from 13 games into perspective, when-looking at our more-recent form.

Even our last two wins were tarnished in some ways – how we went from dominating Brighton in the first half to taking our foot off the peddle so much in the second - conceding a goal in that time - was a little concerning to see at the time and on the back of, what was then, 3 defeats from 4 in all competitions.

As for last Wednesday in Sweeden, it was a good win on a surface that we’re not used to playing on; while our hosts are very much used to it. However, although we had 14 shots on target from 26 efforts, we were still quite wasteful at times despite dominating for the most part; letting the home side back in to level at 1-1. Perhaps this is just new-found higher standards swirling around my head, I dunno. After all, it was a tricky place to go; we rested so many key players ahead of tomorrow’s fixture; we suffered no injuries, got the win and it’s 9 points from a possible 9 in the Champions League group stage. 👍

So, a side who appear to be taking two steps forward before taking a one back, backed by a sure-to-be-emotional & very vocal crowd following the recent passing of their much-loved Sir Bobby Charlton VS a team who haven’t quite found their full stride nor killer touch. Well, having not registered a single draw in those same-13 games, that’s what I’m going for on Sunday afternoon (3:30pm KO GMT). It’s ‘points shared’ for me.

Last season’s, corresponding pre-match prediction and result:

Prediction: Draw

Result: Lost

(Pre-match blog posting from that game)

Expected weather conditions during the game: Mixed bag. Cool, without being too cold at around 12 / 13C; slightly overcast with some sunshine but also a chance of some wet stuff. Bit of a stiff, southerly breeze too.

For those who should, don’t forget to put your clocks & watches back an hour tonight.
